Local Manufacturer Celebrated By Industry For Leadership In Safety

June 12, 2014

HOUSTON (June 12, 2014) – Metal Building Manufacturers Association (MBMA) recognized NCI Building System’s Houston manufacturing plant for achieving an incident rate equal to 50 percent or better than the industry average throughout the 2013 calendar year, a challenging statistic to attain for full-time manufacturing plants. The location has been acknowledged by MBMA for the past eight consecutive years for its unwavering commitment to safety.

Marc Church, plant manager at the Houston facility (7301 Fairview Street, Houston, TX 77041), is especially proud of his team of more than 200 employees for their safety achievements in 2013. The plant, which manufactures pre-engineered building systems using bar and sheet steel, pre-painted coils, and building components such as doors and windows, is NCI’s largest domestic facility. The 53-acre campus has been in operation for more than 40 years and manufactures and ships more than 35,000 tons of steel every year. Moving such a volume increases the risk for accidents, but the company’s focus on safety for employees in all roles has helped them steer clear of incidents.

"MBMA does a great job of recognizing the facilities that constantly put safety first with their annual awards, and we truly appreciate that," Church said. "We have three core values at NCI – safety, quality and productivity, and it’s no coincidence that safety is listed first. We tell our employees that each of them has the right to come to work and go home to their family in the same condition every day. Putting safety first is the only way to do that."

Safety precautions are discussed during every morning meeting, and on-site safety training is also a priority at the plant. Different sessions are regularly scheduled, based on the needs of the team or individuals. Another contributing factor to the plant’s success in safety is NCI’s recently implemented "behavioral-based safety program," which requires employees to observe, review and provide positive and negative feedback to their peers. The plant has seen increased productivity, morale, and sense of ownership for employees since the introduction of this system.

"Year after year, the management and employees at our Houston plant go above and beyond with their safety procedures, and we are happy to see them recognized for their accomplishments," said Carlin Mueller, vice president of manufacturing at NCI Building Systems. "We hold the MBMA safety awards in high regard and are always exceptionally pleased when one or more of our plants are recognized for their performance in safety."

NCI and the Houston plant have – as their ultimate goal – zero incidents, no matter how minor the ailment might be. They believe that education, awareness and the continual reinforcement of the importance of safety is the best way to attain this objective. In addition to the Houston location, two other NCI facilities – Lexington, Tennessee and Atwater, California – also received the MBMA’s Safety Performance Award for their accomplishments in 2013.
